problems scanning into Word

WXP Pro, Word 2002 SP3
One of our clerks scans about 100 handwritten documents a day into Word
documents (Insert Picture from Scanner). After 7 or 8 documents she starts
receiving vague errors (unable to communicate with scanner, problem
encountered obtaining image, that sort of thing, but no error codes or
anything in the Event Viewer) and has to reboot in order to start scanning
again.

This has happened with 3 different makes of scanners and 2 different PC's.
The only common factor has been this user & Word. Has anyone else
encountered a problem like this and where should I be looking for a
resolution?

Wouldn't it be simpler and faster to use the software that came with the
scanner to scan the documents to (say) jpg format files to a folder on the
hard drive, then insert them as picture files into Word as required?

Graham,
Thanks for the response. That is a viable alternative, but not necessarily
easier since it involves the extra steps of saving, naming and deleting the
image files. It is easier to just scan it into a Word document and then save
that document.
Do you have any ideas as to why this problem would seem to keep occurring?
Could there be an overload of some sort of temp file or something?

Bill

A lot depends on your scanner software. Mine uses a basic version of
PaperPort and I can scan right into a doc. I have a friend who uses an HP
All-in-One and she can do it also. (I know this because I walked her thru
the steps over the phone, sight unseen.)

Thanks JoAnn,
PaperPort was one of the apps that we used. The problem doesn't arise when
she scans using the scanner's software and then inserts the resulting image
into a document. It only appears after 7 - 10 consecutive instances of
creating a Word document, using Insert from Scanner then closing the
document. Word becomes unable to communicate with the scanner and the system
has to be restarted.

For now we'll scan to an image and insert the image rather than going
directly, but thanks for the help.
