Hello.

I have several problems:

1) net start RPCSS
results in the following message:
System error 5 has occurred.

Access is denied.

2) diskmgmt.msc
results in the following message:
The RPC server is unavailable.

3) Cut/copy/paste functions do NOT work.

4) winnt32.exe from the i386 folder results in:
Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on
your computer is newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of
Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the
files and settings cannot be recovered.

5) Trying to uninstall SP2 results in:
Service Pack 2
The system cannot find the file specified.
....
The Service Pack 2 was not uninstalled.

6) Outlook Express works well, but can not reply
to any messages nor create a new message. Outlook
Express reports:
There was an error opening this message.
There is not enough memory.

7) One of the first issues I noticed, was that the
TaskBar stopped showing running programs.

Is there is a way to reinstall the RPC services only?
I believe that most of the problems can be solved by
reinstalling RPC.

Thank you very much.

Thanks Carey. Is that a BOT message reply?

I read that same reply earlier in the day. I do
see a lot of replies in Newsgroups where folks,
do not take the time to read and reply to the
question that was asked and the way they reply
involves using a BOT program that replies with
the questions asked and then puts in a standard
reply.

I wonder how many people are doing that? And what
are the reasons in doing that? It did NOT answer
the question that was asked.

Thanks for the BOT reply. If you can answer the
question that was asked, I will appreciate the
courtesy and effort.

Is there a way to reinstall ONLY the RPC services?

Thank you kindly. Good luck with your ROBOT methods
and responses.

comment when asked a specific question if anyone
knew of a way to reinstall ONLY RPC:

Either follow the advice or continue on with your self-generated
issues.

Very interesting comment.

You failed to answer the question again. I will post the
answer for everyone. Congratulations on avoiding a
reply with a BOT answer. ;)

There was one key that some solution from Microsoft
seems to have changed.

The bad key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs]
"ObjectName"="NT Authority\\NetworkService"

The proper key which can be placed into a .reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs]
"ObjectName"="LocalSystem"

Hope this helps everyone. It has fixed a few of the
problems that I stated:
I have several problems:

Access is denied.
FIXED!

2) diskmgmt.msc

3) Cut/copy/paste functions do NOT work.
FIXED!

6) Outlook Express works well, but can not reply

FIXED! Strange how Microsoft makes some software report
a memory problem when an RPC service fails.
7) One of the first issues I noticed, was that the
TaskBar stopped showing running programs.

NOT FIXED :( Looking for the answer to this problem.

No hard feelings Carey. If you can provide another
solution other than reinstall XP from a CD-Boot,
I am interested in hearing about it.

Thanks, and good luck to once again, Tony.

UPDATE:
7) One of the first issues I noticed, was that
the TaskBar stopped showing running programs.

FIXED!
This was fixed as well, but required a reboot to
get there.

Now, if Microsoft or anyone else knows what might
have caused the problem, ie the registry key changed.

That would benefit everyone. If you know Carey, or
you know someone that knows, that would be very
good if you could post the reply here.

My apologies go to you if I said something derogatory.
I had gone through the newsgroup here, searching for
a few hours for an answer and I previously read your
same reply in another message... and having read through
1000 other messages today with alot of BOT type answers,
it was easy to assume that you didn't really read my
request and that you used a BOT type reply. I have
read A LOT of ROBOT replies today, not specifically
in the Microsoft Newsgroup here, but in some of the
stupid newsgroups that have ROBOT folks. :(

Thanks for your answer. Just take a little more
time to read what is being asked. The problems
I presented were 7 in total and there were more
problems. But the final question was asking how
to install RPC. I still don't have a valid
answer to that question, there is a valid answer,
though, and I hope my reply is a benefit to all.
I await an answer to the original question, if
someone can comment about it. Also, the other
question presented here, if anyone knows which
Microsoft or which MVP solution brought about
this problem, it would be greatly be appreciated.

Good luck.

Tony
