problems loading winXP......

R

rferoni

Don't know whats going on as I've installed 2 XP's for friends. Doing my
own now and having trouble. I'm upgrading from 98. I'm doing a new install
as I just like to install this way better. I CANNOT get my PC to boot from
the cdrom. I've tried a bootdisk but it will not give me the option to boot
from cdrom. I'm not even sure my pc is reading the cd rom although it works
fine and is "working properly" when the PC boots up. When I bring up the
bios I do not see the cdrom listed(as are the HDD and floppy) Shouldn't is
say something about the cdrom under IDE primary/secondary? Any ideas??

You need to look into your bios for some boot sequence info. On mine, Boot,
is a major category along the top of the screen. Maybe if you list the bios
type here, someone will know the exact place to look.

R

rferoni

Don't know what you mean about bios "type" but I have gone into bios and set
the boot sequence to cd rom. My cd rom is actually a scsi cd burner/rom
but I don't think that should be a problem. As for booting I've actually
set the WHOLE boot order to cdrom. I also tried setting it to SCSI as there
is an option for this. Still nothing. I CAN get the XP cd to run if I just
boot to win98 but I started this process yesterday and it didn't give me the
option to use NTFS, which I want to do. I'm not sure if I made it far
enough into the process but to format and set the file system should be the
first things done. Still stumped.....

Copy the
I386
folder off your Cd to the hard drive and run setup.exe from there :)

Sounds like your CD rom isn't being detected by the BIOS. Make sure it's
cables are correctly connected and the master/slave jumper is correctly set,
then go back into the BIOS (the screen where you set up the clock, hdd's
etc) and set the drive options to AUTO (or manually set to CD-ROM if that's
what it needs) and try again.

If installing from DOS you need to first run smartdive (unless you want to
watch the install take days) and then run winnt.exe (not setup.exe) from
within the i386 folder. This can be done from the CD, not need to copy the
files to the hard drive first :)

AFAIK, the CD boot feature in most system BIOSes applies to ATAPI/IDE
drives only, so you are hosed in that regard. I don't know if the SCSI
BIOS will boot a CD.

as u r running win98, why not make a floppy boot disk, boot to that with cd
support, then run set-up from the cd

I agree but if you re-read the OP's post he's,"Upgrading" a win98
system but with a,"clean" install IIUC.If so then he can and must run
the installer e.g setup.exe from within windows if this is an OEM full
version of XP that is not auto-booting so he can run it from Win98
otherwise it will give a fault call saying that it cannot be installed
from dos. This is different if the XP cd auto-ran from the BIOD boot
up.Bloody stupid XP again.

Thanks you all for your help. Just now going to try to get everything
working per you all's advice. I will first try an IDE rom and see if it
will boot from there.....

Shep.. it is an upgrade OEM version NOT the full version of XP. When
doing a clean install of XP the upgrade version(as I have for a few
friends) it will ask for your OEM copy of 98/SE/ME to make sure that you
can "legitimately" just upgrade. For the past 2 PC's I've installed XP on
(upgrade version) it booted from cdrom no problem.

As for copying that i386 folder I did as you said and then
posted back but typo'ed out an important factor. When I copied the i386
file I thought you meant run the setup.exe file from there. There is NO
setup.exe file in the i386 folder. I do believe although I typo'ed that
message you understood what I meant as your next post read like you
understood. From what I gather now I am supposed to copy the whole XP cd on
my HDD and then run setup.exe.....thanks again for your time and help.....

Hi,

Finding your problem with the CD-ROM not being recognized to allow
booting interesting. I had this exact problem when trying to install XP. The
Abit KT7 mb gave me the choice to change the boot order to a CD-ROM but it
would not find the CD-ROM so I was in your same pickle. I flashed the bios
to a newer one and wallah, the CD-ROM was suddenly working and it booted the
XP disk to install.

R

rferoni

ok all....

this message posted from XP! swapped IN an old HP cdrom and voila!
it booted. So far so good. Thanks again for all your help......
