Problems Installing Norton System Works 2004

Andy

This is my first visit. I must apologize for my age. My
CompSci degree was earned while I was in the Navy and the
486DX was the "hot" chip and DOS 6.0 was preferred over
that new-fangled Windows thing. Unfortunately, I
neglected to keep up with technology and am behind much of
the state-of-the art curve. One fire at a time, though.

I don't have a first line state-of-the-art computer. On
the contrary, I have an old Compaq, 133 Mhz, 256Mb RAM,
and a 4 Gb hard drive upon which is all of my software...
and there's not a lot of that, either. No extra games,
just Microsoft Works, my mouse, keyboard, and printer.
My ISP is Earthlink and within the ISP's service are
"Spam Blocker" and "Spyware Blocker" programs. I have a
60Gb drive for mere storage. Norton System Works (NSW)
2002 was installed and I received all of the automatic
updates. Everything worked beautifully, until...

PROBLEM: I tried installing NSW 2004, but received an
error message that references problems with programs(?)
called "First Aid 98," (or) "First Aid 2000," and/or
"HelpSpot," and I'm instructed to uninstall those programs
then NSW 2004 then reinstall NSW2004. As near as I can
tell, I do not have any of these programs. I followed all
of Symantec's suggestions that should have enabled NSW
2004 to be installed successfully, but to no avail.

I'd even switch to McAfee if that would help, but just as
some folks prefer Ford over Chevy (or whatever), I chose
to stay with Norton since 1980-something? As of now, I'm
sitting with NSW 2004 and Norton Personal Firewall
(neither installed) and out about $100.

Any ideas short of buying a new 'puter would be
appreciated.

Thank you.

Gee Andy,

I can't help noticing that the retail cost of NSW 2004 may exceed the
present value of your computer... :]

....sorry can't help with your actual problem, though.

Chris
