Problems installing cardbus ethernet PC card on laptop...

Ramon

I'm trying to install a Xircom RealPort Cardbus Ethernet
10/100+Modem 56 model RBEM56G-100 on a laptop with the
following specs:
AMD-K62 300Mhz
96 Mb RAM
It has two PCMCIA slots to be used by two type II or one
type III cards.
Texas Instruments PCI-1220 cardbus controller.
Windows 2000 Professional Edition.

My problem is well described under Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article - 295629

If you start your computer with no CardBus card inserted,
and then you insert one of the affected CardBus cards, the
following symptoms may occur:
--The mouse pointer may alternate rapidly and continuously
between a regular pointer and a busy (hourglass) pointer.
--The computer may perform very sluggishly.
--The CardBus card never finishes being initialized.[This
is what happens to my computer]

If you start your computer with one of the affected
CardBus cards inserted, the following symptoms may occur:
--The computer may stop responding (hang) while attempting
to detect the CardBus card (for example, a PCI Ethernet
controller).
--Removing the CardBus card may allow the computer to
finish detecting the device and installing drivers
[Both of these also happen to my computer]

However, when running on safe mode I get the following
message:

The device 'Texas Instruments PCI-1220 CardBus Controller'
has detected a CardBus card in its slot, but the firmware
on this system is not configured to allow the CardBus
controller to be run in CardBus mode

Which is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
247424.

I've tried with SP4 with no success.

I'll be trying anything and I am not afraid of messing
with the computer (I got it used and very cheap). So, any
help would be appreciated.

I would first try and update the firmware of the notebook. Start with the
BIOS, and then some also have specific drivers and firmware for the PCMCIA
slots.
