Problems Installing Anti Virus Programs

I can't seem to install any anti virus programs on XPE. Anyone else having this problem and if there are any that work better than other ones with XPE? Thanks.

Marc,

That would depend on what has been included in your image.
If the antivirus software dependencies were not included in the image, you will unlikely be able to install it properly.
If you are not the XPe image developer, you may better contact the device manufacturer.

The best antivirus software for you would be the one that the image developers thought about when developing the image. That time that could include necessary dependencies for a particular software and test the image with it (everything goes to testing on XPe).

The direct route is always the best.

Uh... Did you encoded entire thread inside the link?
That's what I would call "precise query"...

Marc,
Not sure if this will help, but you should read this thread.

To my knowledge NO one offers a anti-virus product that will work on
XP Embedded systems.
Our university just went through researching an answer and the only
thing comparable is Sygate's software which is a firewall.

None of the software vendors offer anti-virus software that will run
on XP Embedded as I have called them all.
I do suppose on could compose their own XP Embedded image that would
contain enough components to support anti virus.

I installed Mcafee's Anti-Virus for thin client on a thin client as a
test. I was able to install it. I was never able to get the software
to update itself. The XP Embedded load on a HP T5700 did not seem to
have very many services installed one of which that is needed to auto
update.
I WAS ABLE to manually update the thin clients anti virus dat file.
Once I did that I never tested the anti-virus software to see if it
was actually working or just sitting there looking pretty with its
icon. Never exposed it to a virus.

When I called all the software vendors....they all told me that the do
not have a product that will work with Windows XP Embedded Software
thus stating they do not support XP Embedded.

Good luck.

Sam,

My company is beginning to experiment with XPE. I'm curious as to why you
chose McAfee's Anti-Virus for Thin Client. Was that the only product that
actually installed, or was the full version not tried?

The vendor that we are working with for our new machines recommended Sygate
Firewall (comes preinstalled on the box) and no Anti-Virus software. I
found this to be extremely odd, but after reading your post I may understand
that it is a limitation in the Operating System.

So I don't spend a lot of time chasing my tail, could you also tell me what
other Anti-Virus applications you tried?

Thank you

Debbi H.

Debbi is correct,
Antivirus will run on the embedded device. In fact, the product that I am
working on uses Pc-Cillin Antivirus and I have read several post about other
developers also using this product.

And I have tested others with success from Computer Associates, FProt
and Kaspersky.

Hi Andy,

Kaspersky? What version? Did you happened to componentize it?
I'd love to see AVP component in XPE DB. It is just my favorite and would be a good help in XP Embedded space.

Thank you for the replies. I was concerned that we wouldn't be able to use
any Anti-Virus protection.

McAfee is our choice product, hopefully the testing will be successful!

Thanks

Debbi

I was bored one Saturday last March so i componentized Kaspersky, it
was the previous version 4.5.0.94.

ETrust is my favorite AV program though because the folks at CA are
*very* responsive and open to suggestions.

I have been away from the group for a couple of months busy as heck
with work so I apologize if my question has been answered all ready
Debbi......
Why did you choose Mcafee because I was ONLY able to install Mcafee
Viruscan THinCLient. I could not update the product as the service
that does that is not installed on my XP Embedded Device we are using
at our university which is a HP T5700. WE also have some pre-merger
EVO T20's...but anyway I was never able to get the scheduler service
to run on our thinclients.

Have you run in to this problem and/or fixed it ?
I am looking forward to hearing what your experience has been.

I just got through deploying HOTFIXES to all of the thin clients at
our university. The T5700's were done with a USBMemory stick which I
booted off of with an image contained on the memory stick.

The EVO T20's required that I installed Rapport 4.0 on a server which
I did and then was able to push out the hotfixes and the updated
Raport CLient for the thin clients. What a pain in the but it was
because I could not push out all of the hotfixes at once...I had to do
each hotfix one at a time even though I did it to 10 thin clients all
at once.
