Since repairing Windows Xp uning the system disc, after a system freexe due
to installing Norton Antivirus 2006 upgrade (Ive gieen up on it now) , I
have been

unable to install service pack 2 - keepg getting service pack 2 setup could
not back up registry key error messsages

Can not run windows player movies - system keeps asking for upgrades, which
when downloaded do not appear to be recognised

Can not upgrade to Media Player 10 either

Windows now boots much more slowl

Any suggestions re fixing these problems?

Use Windows key + Pause_Break key> Adv.Tab, Perf.Settings>Data Execution
Prevention tab. Is DEP set for "...essential..." or "...... All...." ?
Read up on DEP if you don't already know about it.

The system at SP2 and you used an SP1 CD to do the repair install,
right? You should try a repair install using a slipstreamed XP w/SP2 CD
but I'd first boot to the Recovery Console and run CHKDSK /P.

Sorry; the 1st was a *partial* post about what may have gone wrong with the
Norton upgrade.
I read the OP as: As a result of a failed Norton upgrade, you had to
reinstall XP. Now SP2 won't install.
DEP may explain that Norton failure. Moot point unless you choose to
upgrade it later.
Is it supposed to be: 1st you reinstalled Xp. Then after a freeze-up by
Norton, SP2 will not install?
