problems during start up

have had pc for a week all went well now when i start to load up i get 2
messages the first says "cant load locally stored profile.... then something
about an I/o operation initiated has failed" then a second message gives me a
tempory profile and all my usual icons are missing from my desktop. Please
can someone help me
