Problems Creating New Child Domain

I want to create a child domain in a domain tree in a forest. Does the
machine that I run DCPROMO on for this need to first be a member server in
the parent domain? Or do I want the machine to be simply in a workgroup
outside of any domain before I run DCPROMO?

Actually it doesn't matter, both ways work. How ever if the server is a
member server the domain name of the parent domain is pre defined in the
dcpromo wizard. Can you describe the behavior of the problem?

DCPRomo is saying the parent domain either doesn't exist or can't be
contacted.

The member server has an LMHOSTS file with lines for both the domain
controller and the domain. The domain controller has an LMHOSTS file with
the server that is running DCPROMO. They should be able to locate each
other.

Hi

Should the "soon to be" child server not point to a DC which hold the parent DNS zone supporting the parent AD domain? so it can find the domain? - this is the way i did it and it found the domain

That is what I am doing? The root domain of the forest is the only domain
at present. There is one domain controller for that root domain.

The server on which I am running dcpromo has an LMHOSTS file that points to
both the domain controller and the domain for the root domain.

What additional steps did you do?
