Help123456789

I have word 2000 and many times when I open a doc that I previously created,
an error mssg pops up saying the doc is corrupt and tells me to copy and
paste this doc. I also get a run time error on occasion. And if I have a
footer that uses the page numbering system, pages are numbered correctly in
word but if I print to a printer or to adobe, then numbering does not work
(says page 5 of 5 as opposed to 5 of 12, for example). There are a few other
problems as well.

I un-installed and re-installed word and tried used "fix" as well but no
change.

Sounds like the document maybe corrupt, especially if othert documents open
and work without incident.
Try copying all but the last paragraph mark into a new document, beware if
your document has section breaks (new page, continuous, etc.) within it, copy
upto the last paragraph mark in each section, ie do not copy over any section
breaks.
To show the paragragh marks, Ctrl+Shift+8 to toggle.
If this does not fix and/or other documents are affected. Rename the
Normal.dot to Normal.old and let Word create a new base template.
Hope this helps

For the error messages, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

The page number problem is possibly something else. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm.

Thanks. A few things:

1. after reading the info:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm It appears to me that if
I use "formats + bullets and numbering" I will always invite corruption?
This is a feature I use all of the time so I will always have problems?

2. Dean said "If this does not fix and/or other documents are affected.

Someone tried to help me find the Normal.dot and it was nowhere to be found.
We then tried the "remote assistance" feature but that would not work
either. So, can someone tell me how to find Normal.dot?

Thanks for any help.

For safe numbering and bullets formatting in Word, use styles. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html and

With Word closed, search for normal.dot in Windows. Make sure to search for
hidden files and folders; then you should see it. Rename the file, and then
restart Word.

I found normal.dot but have two of them. I renamed one with no error messages but changing the other said doing so could make things unstable (like they are not already!) and I did it anyway. The icon changed from a word thing to that funny box that no applications know how to open. So, I hit undo. Should I change normal.dot to normal.old?
Thanks
