Problems arising with SP2

Some may pass me off to networking, but I believe this to be an SP2 problem,
as I never had this problem before.

Using Zone Alarm free version

First Generic Host Process32 asked for server rights, with the source IP
being 207.69.188.185DNS (incoming Accept). I denied it server rights as I
do believe this program should not need server rights. Then Internet
Explorer wanted server rights with the same address. No again. Then
Firefox, and now Outlook express. This IP address resolves to ISP, but I am
very very leary of giving anything server rights as I have never had to give
any of these programs server rights before applying SP2. My log files were
getting extremely overgrown so I had to turn logging off.

I have seen other posts in other newsgroups where other people are having
this problem also. Please advise as to what to do as I'm growing more
confused by the day. I've checked for parasites, viruses and trojans and
ruled all them out.

Open security, firewall, exceptions,to enable a program in the group listed
only out-going info is abled, incoming doesnt apply to these settings.

Lose it and use SP2's new firewall.

Hi Zip:
I use free zone alarm too,, allow the "server rights" , win xp is native
server, your default security setting are disabled anyway, so noone can log

I wouldn't use Windows Useless Firewall if you paid me. If I was using
Windows Firewall, I wouldn't know of this problem, because it doesn't
monitor "outgoing" connections. If I had a trojan horse on my system, I
would never know it. How secure is that? NOT!!

Such isn't needed.

You mean if you did NOT have a good AV program you wouldn't know about the
trojan. If you did have a good AV and adware program then you WOULD KNOW
and in combination with the SP2 firewall one is protected.

Study up.

DO NOT allow the server rights. Generic Host services has absolutely
no need to have server rights.

Just keep saying that if you want to.

Those of us who do "know" will continue to use a good third party
firewall.

And then we will laugh our asses off when you get infected and don't
know it with a trojan. No antivirus program is going to keep you 100%
safe. There is a lag time in which new viruses/trojans hit and new
updates are made available to combat them most of the time.

I missed root's post about this, for some reason I didn't recieve it, no
great loss. I think I'd rather know *before* trojan phoned home, and stop
it dead in it's track. Can't do this with Windows firewall........I think
almost any 3rd party firewall is better. BTW, I decided to give Kerio a
try. Not that I didn't like ZoneAlarm, I just decided after 3 years of
using ZA it was time for a change....
