problem with xp 2 nic cards

gotta slight problem networking 2 pcs. Cant quite figure out where iv gone
wrong. Iv got 2 pcs one originally called master pc and one called a slave
(which is the shuttle pc) Ok heres what iv done

Connected shuttle and pc via crossover cable
Setup ip addresses as
192.168.0.1 my main pc
192.168.0.2 shuttle pc

subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 for both pcs
now the default gateway for the shuttle is 192.168.0.1

this lets the shuttle access my main pc. (btw i HAVE turned file sharing on
on both pcs). everything is dandy this way, it even can access the internet
from the shuttle as well

BUT
I can see the other computer on my main pc, but I cant access any of the
files. Iv tried giving the master pc a gateway of 192.168.0.2 and (when this
didnt work)192.168.0.1 and leaving it blank but no joy. Windows has had a
bang at automatically configing it as well, but with the same results as me.
Im within an inch of thrashing the shuttle to an electron of its silicon
based life. Any tips?
BTW, im more or less a begginer at networking as iv never really done it
before, so im sorry if iv done something really stupid or asked an inane
question.
Also are there any good begginers guides and forums on the internet about
networking?

u might have turned on file sharing,
but did u specify which folder to share?
