problem with windows xp upgrade on dell latitude c600

I have been trying to upgrade my operating system from
2000 professional to xp professional on a Dell Latitude
C600 laptop. It gets to the "finalizing installation"
phase then locks up with about 7 minutes to go. I have
restarted the process twice, but it still locks up in the
final phase.

I checked the hardware compatibility on the microsoft
website and the dell latitude c600 is on the list.

Any suggestions on how to complete the installation?

does it lock up, or hang?
if it hangs, hit shift+F10, open devive manager by
devmgmt.msc, disable USB devices, anything you don't
really need, sound, com ports, etc.
try it, hope it works
