Problem with Welcome Screen mail notification

I'm having a problem with the Welcome Screen on Windows
XP Professional. Under my username, it says that I have
5 unread email messages. I have already read the emails
and have actually deleted the email account from Outlook
Express, but the notification is still there. Is there a
way to fix this error?
