Problem with USB keyboard/mouse and shutdown

C

Christian Neuner

Hi,

I made a XPe image for a Pentium-M with i915GM chipset based system. The
motherboard has 4 USB ports on the I/O panel arranged in 2 groups of 2
connectors.

The image contains among others the following components:
- ACPI Uniprocessor PC
- Windows Logon (Standard)
- Explorer shell
- Generic USB Input Device Support with all components activated

When I connect a keyboard and mouse via the PS2 connectors everything
works like expected. If I use a combined keyboard and mouse device with
one USB connector and connect it to an USB port at the first group on
the I/O panel, everything works also like expected.

But if I connect the USB keyboard and mouse to an USB port at the second
group at the I/O panel, I have the following problem:

When I press "Start->Shutdown->Shutdown system", I get the "Saving user
settings" and after that the "Windows is shutting down" screen. But it
never really shuts down, it just hangs at this point. If I do a restart,
it works fine.

I also installed the standard Windows XP Professional on the system. It
doesn't matter which keyboard or mouse I use, it works like expected.

So I think the problem is within my XPe image.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Christian

it looks like the ACPI option in your board bios is not enable... check
out the bios setting for your board..

This is a very generic list of things to check, but many, many, windows
XPE problems will show up somewhere in this list. Also, the windows
..log files can be HUGE. You can manually search them for the word
'error', or USB or...

1) Be sure you have done a full build with all dependencies resolved.
Be sure you have no errors/warnings.
In the past I have solved many problems this way. I got into
trouble because I manually removed things that I *knew*
didn't matter...
2) Check C:\Windows\FBA\FBALog.txt for errors.
3) Check C:\Windows\SetupAPI.Log for errors.
4) Look in device manager, turn on "show all devices".
Look for problems.
5) Review any documentaiton for the keyboard to see if it has an
issue. (Web search?)
6) In Control Panel, Administrative Tools, System Error Log see if
hang is recorded. Google Search msdn and/or eventid.net for
event id info.
