problem with svchost.exe

I recently upgraded to W2K from W98 but I think it has
gone wrong as the file svchost.exe seems to come up
as "cannot find".
Excel and Word documents won't open (it crashes Excel
every time) and the search/find function on Explorer
doesn't work either.

Have you done a virus scan recently?
There are some nasty worms out there that you were imune to while using W98
