Problem with Sound System

I have problem with my sound system in my laptop ..
when I click on Volume control a message appears telling that there are no
active mixer devices available .. also when I open a media player file ..
another msg apears said there is problem with sound device and so on ..

how can I solve this problem

Windows is telling you that no Sound device is found. Open Control
Panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices, Click on Audio (Tab). Check
the "Default Device" box, if empty or grayed out then your Sound card
or on-board chip device isn't in the current hardware profile or is not
enabled.
Go to your notebook vendor's web-site and download the latest driver
for your specific model. It may require that you uninstall your current
driver package and support software before upgrading.

I have a dell dimension 4300 runninng on windows xp. I have been of late
experiencing problems with the sound. It is so faint that at maximum i hear
nothing. Any help?
