Problem with 'search' facility

When I select 'search' in a windows explorer, or internet explorer window and
then select 'All files and folders' I get an error box saying that
windows/internet explorer needs to close. Other options like 'documents' or
'pictures' are fine!

Windows is happy to search 'all files and folders' if I ignore the error box.

Any ideas? If it is a conflict with another program, how do I figure out
what the culprit is?

Thanks,

Chris

It sounds like Explorer is encountering a corrupted file in the search. If,
for example, a filename becomes corrupted and it hasn't been removed from the
index, Explorer will complain after reaching it. You can either just
continue using the search and ignoring the error or try using CHKDSK to check
your harddrive. To use CHKDSK, open up command prompt and type "chkdsk
[drive]:". Type it without the quotes and replace [drive] with the drive
letter of the volume you are trying to scan. If it reports any errors, try
using the chkdsk fix ("chkdsk [drive]: /f").

Thanks I'll try that!

Do you think that this could make a difference even without starting the
actual search procedure? Just simply clicking on the 'All Files and Folders'
link in the search toolbar sends up the error message. The DrWatson error
file twitters on about "ERROR: Symbol file could not be found" several times
over.

Will have a go with CHKDSK anyway.

Thanks again

Chris

For some reason the chkdsk[C]:/fix doesnt run on my PC it comes up with
the chkdsk window and then it closes again. Is this a problem with my
windows Xp or something else?
