problem with scan

M

Monroe

Hello,
I'm having problems trying to scan system. The program
scans and locates a ton of adware but keeps "locking up"
at the same point in the scan. When the program starts to
scan the registry at
hkey\localmachine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversio
n\uninstall\win tools, I start to get error msg's "out of
vitual memory" at that point the scan stops and the pc
freezes. I also tried running the scan in safe mode but I
get the same results. I've also tried removing the win
tools value from the registry, also downloaded and ran
norton win tools "removal tool" I'm kinda stuck here! I
don't want to wipe the disk clean and reload windows.
I would really appreciate any ideas or suggestions at
this point.
Thank You in advance, monroe

Restart in safe mode, open Microsoft AntiSpyware, on the scan page, choose
scan options > Full System Scan (check the boxes below) > click "Run Scan
Now".

Restart in safe mode instructions:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx

Also run these additional AntiSpyware utilities in safe mode:
Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
Spy Sweeper - http://www.webroot.com

Hi

I must admit i dont know much about this error message im
not sure if its a bug in MS Antispy or unrelated to MS
but lets see if you can free up some spªce.

What size is your pagefile(virtual memºry) ?

Right click "My Computer" - Properties - Advanced (tab) -
Settings (Button under Performance) - Advanced (tab) -
Virtual Memory - Or use control panel > then system

On mine i have 512mb or ram then for the virtual memory
the initial size is 768mb and the maximum size is 1536 mb

Have the initial size be at least 1.5 times bigger than
the amount of physical RAM.The maximum size is 3 times
your RAM (This should be the default anywªy)

Example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size
would be 384, the maximum size would be 1152.

Bill James MS MVP has a convenient tool, 'WinXP-
2K_Pagefile', for monitoring the actual usage of the Page
file, which can be downloaded here

http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks

**Note this is vbs scripting so you will have to allow
your antivirus software to run the script as most AV's
will block it. (Bill James is very well respected and the
AV warning's are just because its a VBS script)

Another way to find out is by using Task Manager
(control,alt & delete):

Open Task Manager and go to the Performance Tab.

Notice the Physical Memory section. Look at the Total
figures: example - 785904 K (that's the amount of
installed RAM).

How much RAM is available? example - 372924 K - more than
half of the installed RAM.

How much memory is your system committed to? Look at the
Commit Charge section, at the Total figures: example -
429604 K.

What was the largest amount of memory your system has
ever committed itself to since the last boot? Look at the
Peak figures: example - 453168 K. This means that you're
running close to your peak, and although your system has
peaked to around 450000 K, it's still far from using up
its RAM.

you can also see the current amount of memory used by
looking at the lower right corner of Task Manager, where
it says Commit Charge: 417M / 1250M.

Pagefile Fragmentatiºn

If the pagefile gets fragmented your system's performance
will decrease. System Internals has 'PageDefrag', a free
utility that shows fragmentation in the pagefile and then
offers the option of defragmentation at boot time.

The utility can be downloaded from HERE

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtm

Once you download just unzip the file and run
pagedfrg.exe.

It may sometimes happen that the system give 'out of
memory' messages on trying to load a program, or give a
message about Virtual memory space being low. Possible
causes of this ªre:

The setting for maximum size of the page file is too low,
or there is not enough disk space free to expand it to
that size.

The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shut-
down. In the Virtual memory settings, set to have no page
file, exit, shut down the machine and reboot. Delete
PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive if more than just C:), set
the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use.

The page file has been put on a different drive without
leaving a minimal amount on C:.

There is trouble with third party software. If it happens
at boot and the machine has an Intel chipset, the message
may be caused by an early version (before version 2.1) of
Intel's 'Application Accelerator'. Uninstall this and
then get an up-to-date version from Intel's site.

Other things you can do to free up spªce :

run the disk cleªnup

goto start then run and type

cleanmgr

on the page that opens free up anything thats not needed
(temp files, recycle bin etc..) then goto to the second
page (More Optiºns)

on the system restore part press clean up to remove all
the restore points except for your most recent ºne

Hope This Helps
