Help, my screen saver stays on for a few minutes and then goes back to
the desktop for a few minutes and then back to screen saver. I've tried
changing screen savers and every other setting. This has been going on
for a month or two. The system also won't power save. I' m running
windows xp home.

Sounds like some process is running periodically in the background,
waking up the system from the screen saver and preventing it from going
into power saving mode. Turn off the indexing service - for the most
part it's not needed anyway. Start | Run | services.msc. Scroll to
Indexing Service in the right pane, right click on it, stop it if
started, and change startup type to disabled. If that doesn't help do
some clean boot troubleshooting to try to determine what's running in
the background.

You have a backgound program running 24/7 that is causing your niggle.
Use msconfig to tweak it out.
