problem with password box on xp pro

My XP pro box has occasional problems with the login screen.
Its not on a network, so uses the 'friendly' screen, with four profiles
each with a password.
Sometimes, logging off one profile and on to another, the second profile's
password box doesn't respond to the mouse and the text caret doesn't appear
for the password. The only workroudn I have at present is a restart, after
which the password boxes are all fine

Any idea what the problem is?

I've had this problem several times as well -> i've heard it has something to
do with sp2 since i was using a computer with xp sp2 and it seemed to have
this password freeze-up error a lot. It did happen to me once when I was
using my own computer (which doesn't have sp2), but it hasn't happened
since...
My best guess is it's some sort of script error and the only way to solve it
is with a reboot. (I'm still curious though!) =\

This has been reported various times over the last year or so but no one
has figured out why it happens, which might let us figure out a fix. The
workaround - instead of rebooting - is to do Ctrl-Alt-Del at the Welcome
Screen. This will get you the classic logon box so you can type in the
user name and password (which apparently people are able to do - I've
not come across this issue although a friend has).
