Every time I boot my computer and try to read my e-mail in Outlook Express my
incoming mail server "mail.comcast.net" is removed and replaced with
127.0.0.1. Can you tell me what's causing this and how to stop it?

Hi,

It may be your HOSTS file. Open notepad, click file/open and navigate to:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

Set the file types to "all types" and select the HOSTS file. Click open and
see if your mail server is listed here preceeded by the 127.0.0.1 entry. If
so, remove it or comment it out and then close saving the changes.

You've got an application running that is acting as a proxy server. This
is common with antivirus and antispam programs. See what you've got
installed. If this has just started happening, look to any "security"
programs you've recently installed and check out their options.

Then the issue isn't with your Hosts file. Do as I said and look to see
what kind of security software you are using. Older versions of Norton
Antivirus, for instance, acted as a proxy server to protect your email.
Try turning off any scanning of your email by your antivirus program
(this does not remove your protection from emails with infected
attachments) and see if that helps.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it's causing the problem, and even Symantec says it's
not necessary:

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
