Problem with Outlook and Comcast Email Synchronization

Robin

Hi!

The following is a chat I had with a Comcast rep about my
problem:

Patrick > Thank you for contacting Comcast. This is
Patrick K.
Patrick > How may I help you?
Robin > Hi Patrick
Robin > I have had problems with linking my Outlook 2000
with my Comcast email account
Patrick > Are you unabel to send, receive, or both?
Robin > I have tried using the FAQs and still does not
work
Robin > Both
Robin > I get error messages
Robin > A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect
to the server. (Account: '(e-mail address removed)', POP3
Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Error Number: 0x800ccc15).
Robin > and the other is the SMPT version
Patrick > Are you connecting tot he email server through
the cable modem on your account?
Robin > yes
Patrick > One moment, please.
Patrick > Are you running any type of firewall or anti-
virus programs?
Robin > yes, McAfee anti-virus
Patrick > Please temporarily disable all email scanning
functions in that program. Then close and re-open your
Outlook program.
Robin > I used to have firewall, but it expired recently
and I haven't renewed yet
Robin > I have done that and am waiting for Outlook to
connect to server
Patrick > Has disabling the programs and re-launching
resolved the matter?
Patrick > Thank you.
Robin > not yet
Robin > I received a "Failed" message on sending email
Robin > and am sure I will get a "Failed" message for
incoming, as has been happening
Patrick > May I have the full message that is now being
received?
Robin > Sure - for some reason it won't let you cut and
paste the error message but I can type them for you
Patrick > You cannot cut and paste from Outlook, only
from Outlook Express.
Robin > A timeout has occurred while communicating with
the server. (Account 'mail.cpmcast.net', SMTP
Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Error Number 0x800ccc19).
Robin > and another message is
Robin > A timeout has occurred while communicating with
the server. (Account 'mail.cpmcast.net', POP3
Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Error Number 0x800ccc19).
Robin > These are basically the same messages I have been
receiving
Patrick > Thank you, Robin. Remember that we would not
provide direct support for an issue that is directly
related to Outlook 2000. We only provide client support
to Outlook EXpress.
Patrick > In checking the Microsoft site, the errors may
be a win proxy issue related to Outlook.
Robin > What makes you think this is an Outlook 2000
issue?
Patrick > You may want to consult the Microsoft website
in that regard.
Robin > I think I tried that before but got nowhere
Patrick > As I stated, the information regarding the
errors from Microsoft. I can further test your IP
connection tot he email servers with you.
Patrick > YOu should also then try to send/receive
usign Outlook EXpress for testing purposes.
Robin > okay
Patrick > What operating system are you using?
Robin > Windows XP
Patrick > From the DOS command prompt, please run a ping
test to both mail.comcast.net, and smtp.comcast.net
Patrick > To copy from a Dos window ,click on the
colored icon at the top left uppermost corner, select edit
from the drop down menu and then>mark, highlight results
and then hit enter ,after that paste those results in
this chat.
Robin > I haven't done it in a while, so could you tell
me the easy way to get to DOS
Patrick > Please go to Start, run, and then enter cmd
Robin > done - now what is a ping test?
Patrick > The command for a ping test, respectively,
will be:
Patrick > ping mail.comcast.net and ping smtp.comcast.net
Robin > do I type the word "and" between the pings?
Patrick > No.
Patrick > Just , for example:
Patrick > ping mail.comcast.net
Robin > thanks - and do I do do each ping sequence
separarately? like you showed?
Patrick > Please do. Then copy and paste after each test.
Robin > Ping 1 results:
Robin > hmmm - didn't paste!
Patrick > To make it easrer, maybe, can you just type in
what the test statistics were?

Robin > you're welcome
Patrick > It doe slook like your computer is connecting
to the servers. I would suggest the following. Consult
the Microsoft site regarding the specific error numbers
you get. see what they advise you to do. YOu can also ry
backing up email and address book content, then deleting
and rebuilding the entry in Outlook for the email address.
Patrick > before doing that, however, try setting up
Outlook EXpress as a test.
Robin > okay - I'll give that a try

Patrick > You are quite welcome. If Outlook EXpress
errors out as well, chat back.
Patrick > Is there anything else I can help you with at
this time?
Robin > no I don't think so

questions.

Internet, please ensure you have the latest security
updates from Microsoft (www.microsoft.com/security). If
you have any questions visit our Security Section in the

So there you have it. Does anyone have any ideas or
answers for me?

Thanks for your time and attention.

Are you using a router that lets you share a single IP address to many
machines or are you directly connected to the comcast cable modem? If
behind a router, what kind?

Did you try the test they suggested with Outlook Express? Did it work or
fail? (Outlook Express and Outlook share some of the same components when
it comes to POP/SMTP communication.)

Last but not least, have you tried turning on diagnostic logging in Outlook
2000. This might help us determine if the failure is truly a can't connect
or it is timing out during the handshake/data transfers. Here is the link
to turn on diagnostic logging.
