Problem with Outlook Address Book

S

Sam Wonderer

I thought my Outlook 2003 address book was "user.wab" (which I backed up
before my hard disk required formatting) but having looked at some of the
postings here, it seems that Outlook doesn't use Windows Address Book.
Anyway, I have an older version of a wab file - so 2 questions please:
a) would anyone tell me how I can get the addresses from that file into
Outlook please?
b) How do I find out where Outlook stores the addresses so I can backup the
correct file in future
Thanks a lot.

Hi - one more thing. I can see my addresses under "Contacts" (in the
navigation pane shortcut), but they do not appear when I want to send
messages. When I click on the Address Book or "To List, I get an error
message "The address list could not be displayed. The Contact folder
associated with this address list could not be opened. It may have been moved
or deleted or you do not have permissions".

These contact are more recent than my wab file so is there any way to
recover them please? Thanks.

In the pst file, which contains all your Outlook data - mail, calendar,
tasks, journal, notes and contacts.

Thanks for that - still no joy. I tried all the steps in the "howto-outlook"
FAQ page you provided, including the "Exception" step. Does anyone have any
other advice please? Is there anyway to extract the addresses from the
contacts folder and then bring them back into Outlook through some import
utility? I guess this would still require Outlook to access the addresses
first! I'm most grateful for any help please? Thanks

You may have a corrupted mail profile. Create a new one in Control
Panel-Mail-Show Profiles-Add.
Connect it to your existing pst file and see if that solves the problem.

Those instructions are all correct. If they did not work for you, you did
not follow them correctly. If you need help you will need to post exactly
what you did and what happened so we can tell what you did wrong. "I tried
all the steps" and "still no joy" tells us nothing.
There is no information to import. The Outlook Address Book contains no
information. It is simply a view of your Contacts.

Thanks guys - you're right Russ (of course!) - it did work. In fact, both
methods worked - creating a new profile worked too. However, one problem
still remains - I can only access the addresses by clicking the To button or
Address Book button. How can I get the adddresses by typing letters in the
"To" box as before please? Thanks.

I think I'm talking about "Autocomplete" address names. Am i right in
thinking that I should have copied a file from my old Outlook data to get
Outlook to autocomplete addresses as before? Is there any other easy way to
enable autocomplete on for all my addresses?

Autocomplete has nothing to do with your Contacts. It will start to work
once you've populated your autocompletion cache by sending messages.
