A friend of mine is having a hell of a problem with outgoing SMTP mail.
He's using outlook express on a new computer with Windows XP home
edition.

Outlook express is all configured correctly, I'm sure, but SOMETIMES
(more often than not), he gets an error when sending SMTP mail - "Your
server has unexpectedly terminated the connection".

Now - when I set up OE on my computer with exactly the same mailserver
settings as his, it works flawlessly.

I got him to install socketspy and watched the connection - when the
connection stalls the SMTP transaction takes place normally up until his
machine sends the final "." on it's own line. The server just doesn't
respond.

Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. are you using WOW? I have reloaded XP and checked and re checked, I can not find anything wrong but it still will not work on this machine.....

If you have a firewall installed (e.g. Zone Alarm, Norton System Works, etc.), check its
settings and error logs to make sure that is it not blocking your mail program. If you
have an anti-virus program set to scan outgoing mail, that could also be blocking your
mail or the firewall could be blocking the anti-virus program.

Nothing on the machine except Windows XP, Office, Norton Antivirus.
Norton has the outgoing email scan turned OFF.

I'm doing this over the phone for him - if I was sat next to his
computer I'm sure I would have broken it in half by now.

Try installing another mail client like Mozilla Thunderbird (:P) to see
if OE is playing up, most likely... :P
