Problem with Opening document from Network

A custom built application's code is written to open a document from a
network share.There are two ways to open the document from shared drive

through application.

1)From one application document is opening directly from shared drive

2)Another application, copy the document from shared drive to local folder
and then document is opening from local folder.

If the document size is more than 25MB copying from shared drive to local
through application and to open from local is taking more time(11 -13

min) for few users but for other users through the same way document is
opened within 2-4 minutes

If the document with size more than 25 MB is opened directly from shared
drive through another application, for some users it will take 2-4

minutes and for another user will take 11-13 minutes.

Strangely, the same code/application works exactly as intended on a
different PC having supposedly similar environment ( Windows XP/ Office

2003)
Are there any settings that control this? What could be causing the code to
behave different on the different machines running Office 2003 and

XP?
