problem with numbered paragraph

I'm having a problem with numbered paragraphs. I have 3 paragraphs in a
section. I want to number them. So, I select all 3 and click the number
paragraph button on the toolbar. The first and 3rd paragraph are numbered
but not the 2nd paragraph. The 2nd paragraph however is indented like the
1st & 3rd paragraphs. Anything I do the 2nd paragraph, with regards to
numbered paragraphs is reflected on the 1st paragraph.

I've seen similar behavior in this document before when I would number a
paragraph the whole document would show up numbered. And, the headers and
footers would have a new blank line included. I would hit the undo button
and all the extra paragraph numbering would be undone - with the exception
of the intended paragraph. The extra line in the header/footers would have
to be deleted manually. If I did enough paragraph number / undo and forget
to fix the extra lines in the header/footers I would nothing but blank lines
on each page.

Anyway, any ideas as to what I can do to solve this problem?

Most likely you're dealing with a single paragraph rather than two. Display
nonprinting characters (Ctrl+*), and you will no doubt see that the first
"paragraph" ends in a line break rather than a paragraph break.

OK, I can try that but...I forgot where the paragraphs in question are
located in my document (>500 pages). Any way to find only numbered
paragraphs?

Have you turned off "Define styles based on your formatting?" That's the
most insidious of all.

Yup. Weird thing about this problem is it's not repeatable on every try. I
was able to number a few paragraphs before it started with the weird
reformatting problem again.
