How do I stop it before Word starts? what do I click on? then when I have
got into this BIOS screen - what do I do? As you can tell I am a bit
illiterate with the inner works of a computer!!

If you can't find the Numlock setting under Advanced Options in
your BIOS, then maybe your BIOS doesn't support that setting.
You can edit the registry to achieve the same thing... see http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/196/ .
Thank you for your info - I decided to watch the 'startup' very carefully &
notice it said 'delete button' to stop. I did that, and yes it was already
set - but i decided to turn it off again and then reset it & press OK. I
have only done that today- but it appears that it might have done the trick
'cause it came on when I restarted the computer (flick on, then off, then on
again during the process. I will wait until tomorrow am, when I start up
again, hopefully your advise will work. Thanks again
