Problem with network share

I have 2 XP SP2 computers on a network. One works locally on files and
the other accesses these via the network.

Recently there have been errors when trying to access the shared folders.

"The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Shortcut to
Documents.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is
properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try
again."

The problem is intermittent so after checking the hub and all
connections I ran ping computer -t and left it going while we worked.
After some time we again got the error and looked back at the command
window to see that there had been no disruption in the pings.

I can't see any other errors and the computer sharing the files
experienced no difficulty or problems in operation.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

If your sharing files without a server, ie : your machine and two others
connecting to it, you might find it easier to map a network drive then the
other two machines would create this connection when they are turned on, you
can also assign a letter to this drive on the other two machines, this drive
would then appear in my computer and when clicked would show the contents of
what it is mapped to on your machine.

Andy,

How would this differ from using a shortcut using a direct UNC (other
than a drive letter appearing in My Computer)?

The previous configuration is one that has been in operation for some
time and there have been no other recent configuration changes.
