Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro and I am using the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse
5000. For the past few days, the right mouse click has either not been
responding at all or responding only after many clicks. I changed the
batteries, but the problem persists. Do I need a new mouse? Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Yes it is the mouse. You can try it in another computer to be 100% sure
though. You shouldn't need to install any of the mouse software to try
it in another computer. And I wouldn't if it asks you too. The stock
mouse driver should be fine to test it.

Have you opened it and cleaned it?

I live in a city with a lot of dust and humidity in the sumemr and I
find it necessary to open and clean the roller bars and the vicinity
of the micro switches at least 2-3 times a year.

I have cats as well and it only takes a couple of whickers to fudge
the things up.

Fine tweezers are a help.

Besides BillW50's suggestion, you might try changing the position of the
wireless receiver. Sometimes it help to place it farther away from the
mouse.

Thanks BillW50, D.Kirkpatrick, and Paul. I gave the bottom of the mouse a
good cleaning and I moved the wireless receiver farther from the mouse. Right
clicking seems to be workng now. Again, I thank each of you very much.

I'm glad you let us know the problem is fixed. Fuzz inside the mouse was
common before the ball and roller technology changed to laser technology.
Opening a laser mouse is not a good idea. I suppose fuzz on the bottom of
the mouse could have been the problem. You might move the wireless receiver
back to where it was to figure out what actually fixed your problem.

Read the OP. It is a wireless laser mouse.

Have you checked the laser lenses? These do become coated with
fingerprint grime and other such crud, both the mouse and the mouse
receiver. Wipe these lenses with some lens cleaner tissue and see if
this makes a difference. Gordon

Again, thanks to everyone. I cleaned the lens of the mouse and of the
receiver with No-Glare Lens Cleaner. The right mouse click is working fine. I
also moved the receiver to different positions, but this did not seems to
have any additional effect after the lens cleaning. I now opine that the
lenses were dirty. Have a very Good one everyone.

Lesson here...wash your hands after you go to the bathroom, if you
plan to use your computer. ;-)
