Problem with KB835732

Rick

Installed this security fix on W2K Pro SP4 system. Upon
reboot which took much longer than normal to complete the
following message appeared five times in the application
event log:

Timed out sending notification of device interface change
to window of ""

The source of this event was the PlugPlayManager and the
event id was 256. Backed off the fix and the system
returned to normal.

I have the same problem. I see even a list of 15 warning events
in the application log, each time when win2k is (re)started.
The application log shows also a unique error event with ID 1000,
which occured when the system was shut down after the KB835732
update.
I experimented also with a clean win2k sp4 backup (without any
installed applications), and I got the same problems after applying
the KB835732 update.

I also had a problem with this fix - it caused my PC
(Windows 2000) to lock up all of my resources, hence, my
computer was locked up until I could delete the fix. Have
you found out if this fix is really critical???

After days of trying to find the solution, this is what
worked for me, go into Device Manager, double-click
the "Secondary IDE Channel>Advanced Settings, and if
Device 0 says that the Current Transfer Mode is "Not
Available" then change the Device Type to "None" and
the "Transfer Mode" to "PIO Only". For some reason the
KB835732 security patch hangs the "Plug and Play" with
multiple Time-Outs.
