Problem with Installs

I have a system running XP SP1. I recive the message "Windows Intaller
Service could not be accessed ..." when trying to install software. I have
tried re-registering the Windows Installer but that did not help. It looks to
me as if there is a bigger problem than just Windows Installer. When I looked
at the dependency in Services for Windows Installer there is no dependency -
I think it should be dependent on RPC. To further compound the problem when I
look at RPC under dependencies there are none. That is, RPC is not dependent
on any other service and there are no services that are dependent on RPC. I
think there should be many services dependent on RPC. So, I am thinking that
the real problem with this PC may be the dependencies between RPC and other
services (Windows Installer being one of them). Does this make sense? Any way
to fix this dependency problem?

Maybe someone knows a better method but I'm thinking a repair install is
probably in order. Some viruses break the RPC service and removing the virus
causes many problems.

Thanks, Kerry -

The repair install seems to have worked. The dependencies for RPC and for
Windows Installer have been repaired and I can now install software on this
PC.

You're welcome. Thanks for the update. It's always good to hear something
that worked for future reference.
