I recently reinstalled everything on my system and downloaded and installed
all the critical updates. But I seem to be havning a new problem with
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6.0 sp1. Whenever I start up a new
session in XP Pro, they ask me again if I want them to be my default browser
and email client. At first, another non-Microsoft program called Download
Accelerator was doing the same thing.
In my efforts to troubleshoot the problem, I went to do a repair
installation of IE 6 from the Install-Remove applet in control panel, but
could not find the program listed there. So then, I went to the Windows
update installation directory on the hard drive, found the setup file, and
ran that. It came back with an error message saying that the installed
version was newer than the version I was trying to install. Setup then
refused to install IE6 and then shut down. I figured that IE6's and OE6's
cumulative updates were made to blame, so uninstalled those. That neither
helped me to do a repair install or cure the repetitive default problem.
For whatever reason, Download Accelerator is no longer asking me to set it
as the default downloader.
Any ideas on how to cure this problem?
