problem with hard resets

mikemycek

i recently reinstalled winxp with sp1 on a new hard drive. when i boot
to normal windows mode, the pc suddenly shuts off and then restarts
like i pressed the reset button. this occurs just after the desktop
icons appear. other times it will be at random times especially when IE
or firefox are open. in safe mode, i can often keep the system up and
running for up to 24 hours but it will periodically do a hard reset. is
this a software issue, memory conflicts, bad drivers????? is ther a way
to check a log upon startup to see what may have caused the hard
reset??
thank you in advance

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.

In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart.

Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).
Apply change.

Doing this will set Windows to show a Stop code & text if it ever gets a "failure" condition. When you get one, make sure you write down all of the code and the text next to it. Then you can do more research.

See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section, In the Startup
and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "automatically restart"
to clear it then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

That should put a stop to the reboots. However they may be replaced
by "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP errors. If this does happen then the
contents of the STOP error message including the STOP code and the 4
parameters plus any file or module names mentioned will be a direct
clue as to the underlying cause of your problems.

Good luck

Start | Run <type in> drwtsn32 <enter>
The application errors will usually show your problem(s).
