Problem with getting inbox messages in OE after changing computers

Hi,
I think that I may not be setup on the network properly and there's no one
available to help. I changed computers, but all I did was reconnect the
plugs to the new computer. I have window xp and I don't know where to look
to get connected to the network properly. Someone managed to send mail to me
from another computer, but the printer is also not connected and none of the
messages that were in my inbox in the old computer are showing up on the new
computer. What do I need to do? I tried following the instructions posted,
but got as far as C:\Document and Settings\[My Username]\... and there was no
Local Settings file to continue. I can also send mail out from Outlook
Express, but that's all.

Thanks

In your OE application, compare the set up options to the one from your old
system. Check to make the proxy settings are set the same, both inbound and
outbound. I am not at home right now but when I can, I will check on a few
things and get back to you tonight, if you have not gotten help from someone
else by then.

I am not sure what proxy settings are. The settings for the inbound and
outbound servers are the same as on the old computer. On the old computer,
everything was on Outlook and on the new computer, I only have Outlook
Express. I still think that I'm not connected to the network properly
because I don't seem to have any printers attached.

Thanks

If it's a new computer then you need to set the printers up - they don't
just magically appear.....

So how would I do that? When I go to the Control Panel to add printers, it
doesn't seem to be able to find any and I know there is one attached to the
office network. So how do I find it?

Thanks

In the Outlook environment of your old system go to the menu bar and select
Tools\Accounts. Then on the “All†tab go down to the selection that has your
name in it under the “Accounts†section. Under “Type†it should be called
“news(default)â€. Highlight it and then select the “Properties†button on
the right side. Look at how your settings are set up and the wording within
the text fields in the General and Servers tab.

Next, select your server name under the Account category back in the “Allâ€
tab and select the “Properties†tab as before and go through the same process
to see how the General and Server tabs are set up. Make notes of what you
see.

Once done, go to your new system and do the same thing there for your OE to
see if those setups match what was on your old system. If everything thing
is the same then you may have to call your ISP and have them reset your
password.

As far as the printer goes, try to check all the connectors and make sure
that the printer cable has been reconnected snuggly. But, let's see about
the email settings first then go from there.

Post back if you have suceeded or not.
Good luck!

So no printers show when you select Network Printer and then browse? Are
these printers properly networked, or are they shared printers attached to
other machines?

In the Outlook environment of my old system, when I go to the menu bar and
select Tools, it took forever because there was no Accounts option under
Tools, I found it under Service. Anyways, I matched everything as best as I
could and I still got the pop-up to say that password was rejected. I'll
email my ISP again, but he hasn't been responsive yet. When I try to use the
Printer Wizard to add a Printer, I get to Browse for Printer, it shows the
Microsoft Windows Network and the company network, but no printers and when I
next, it says that I can't connect to a printer and that a valid printer name
may not have been entered and when I type in the name of the printer in the
printer name field, I still get the same message.

Thanks

whether the printer (we only have one) is networked properly? The printer
works for all the other machines in the office and my old computer when I
switch the ethernet cable back.

Thanks

Just out of curiosity, is this a home network setup or one that is setup in a
business where there are several computers setup on a network group? If it
is a home network, can I assume that you have it going through some sort of
router (wireless or wired)? If it is a home setup then try and see if you
ping your printer’s IP address or “Fully Qualified Name†on the network.

Start\Programs\Accessories\Command Prompt. In the command Prompt window
type:
“Ipconfig†without the quotes then hit the return key.
You will see your own computer’s IP address.
Next type: ping (your IP address)
You reply should be something like:
Reply from xx.xx.xxx.xxx: bytes=xx time<1ms TTL=128
You should see this for several lines. If you see this then you network is
fine from your side of the router.

Next type:
ping xx.xx.xxx.xxx the “X†represents your ip address. Or type: ping (your
printer network name). If you get a response then your net work is fine and
can see the printer. If not then you have a network problem on the
router/printer side. Then check your router’s IP address to make sure you
are on the same network as well as the cable going from the router to the
printer. Or if your printer is connected to one of the PCs then check the
connection between those two devices.
I am not sure what your background is so forgive me if this is too techie,
but it seems like a little troubleshooting might help in getting to the
bottom of at least the printer issue.

Correction: "Next type:
ping xx.xx.xxx.xxx the “X†represents your ip address. Or type: ping (your
printer network name)."

The "X" represents your "Printer" IP address in this next step...sorry!
