Problem with Explorer.exe

Hi

For the last couple of weeks maybe more I have been getting the error
warning saying that Explorer needs to close.
This can happen randomly but usually when I open My Computer or explore a
drive this will trigger the problem.
I always send the error report to Microsoft but have never had anything back.

The problem seems to be getting worse.

Looking at event viewer I see the following 'errors'

Running the System File Checker (sfc) is not going to be useful, as you
found out.

The first thing to do is scan for viruses and malware:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

After you've done that and know that the computer is clean, if the
problem persists please go to this link to see what to include in your
next newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Then come back with all pertinent details (including the results of your
malware troubleshooting) and someone will help you.

I'm sorry, but you will need to tell us how you verified that your
system is clean. What programs (and versions) did you use to determine
this?

If the system is in fact really clean, then:

1. Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

2. What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

3. If failures are truly random, then you should do hardware
troubleshooting. The newness of the hardware is irrelevant. Here are
some general hardware troubleshooting steps:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Troubleshooting

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

HI

Ok, I run Hitman Pro which runs several well known programes that it makes
sure are updated.
I also run A2suared all the time and Nod32 AV.
Sweeps with SpyBot, Ad-Aware. in the background are SpywareBlaster and
Spywareguard.

I have done tests on my hard drives and ram using powermax and mem test.

The errors in event veiwer were posted in my opening question.

I hope this will enable you to help me :)

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. Just knowing that explorer.exe has hung isn't
enough to narrow down the problem since explorer.exe is the graphical
user interface.

You say your computer is perfectly fine hardware and software-wise. You
haven't told us what - if anything - has changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't. Without seeing the computer,
I'm afraid I just can't guess.

Hi

The only thing that has changed are removal of Norton Internet Securities
and replaced with NOD32.
Plus whatever Windows updates that have come out.
Other than that little has changed?

I struggled with this problem for nearly two weeks--deleted several
updates, had 2-3 telephone discussions with MS Techs; did clean
re-install of XP etc. After clean XP install, I began re-loading things
from Backup drive and found the Windows Explorer problem re-occurred
when I re-installed PhotoShop 7.0. Installed and removed Photoshop 7.0
several times and each time the problem re-occurred and went away
respectively. Had used PhotoShop for several months on this XP computer
and for years with Win 98.

Doesn't make sense, but that is what happened. I have switched from
PhotoShop 7 to another Photo Editor.

For the last 2 weeks I've been having the " Offset : 000139f8 " problem with
Explorer . So I did a complete XP Home re-install on Friday 28 April . All
went well until 12 noon today , 1st May when the problem re-ocurred ! I now
think it must be hardware-related rather than software, because the system is
clean after the re-install .
