Hi. Just got our first laptop. Trying to send an email toa business and
the computer says my computer (with Vista) no longer supports http programs
like my MSN email. So I did the windows live download, then nothing
happened. What to do? Ken

Gary, I did a download and then ran it. But it was very brief (like not a
lot downloaded). Then nothing happened. Can I not keep MSN mail with Vista?

How did you access MSN mail before Vista?
With a browser like Internet Explorer, or with MSN Explorer, or some
other way? Some MSN accounts have POP access, but most don't.

I don't know if there is a version of MSN Explorer that will run in
Vista. You might ask the MSN experts who hang out here:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...fault.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.msn.discussion

Also, it should be possible to get you set up with Windows Live Mail,
but that is also off-topic here. The WLM experts can be reached here:

Vista I am finding out does not support old XP type operating systems. I am
having the same problem as well as my daughter. We both have new puters with
vista and frankly I may ship mine back and buy another puter with XP on it.

I don't know what "does not support old XP type operating systems"
means. Generally it is only a few older applications that aren't supported.

We can often help you with workarounds if you give us the details of
your exact problem.

this is what microsoft told me this morning when i had them on the phone (
twice), they also said they had a 150 dollar fix for it. This link you gave
me is just another DL that costs money and doesnt fix the problem (registry
mechanic, which i already downloaded 3 times),and now another one that runs
30 bucks and does not repair it??. This is really beginning to bother me.
What part of "doesn't work" is it that microsoft doesn't get. Vista does not
support XP, or any other mail i used to have (other than cutting and pasting
or typing in the address i wish to email. And even then it is not 100% . I do
get non deliverable notices t othem still. I am not interested in "buying"
more software from microsoft to fix a problem they know they have. Sorry if
this sounds like "harping" (whining), but this goes beyond obserd.

Looks like you're confusing the volunteers who answer in this newsgroup
with Microsoft employees. It's been months since I saw any sign that
any Microsoft employees read this newsgroup unless they are already
retired from their Microsoft job. Microsoft has given some of the
volunteers who run this newsgroup the title MVP, but no paychecks to
go along with that title. A number of software companies seldom if
ever have their best employees work at answering the phone; it wouldn't
be a surprise if Microsoft is one of them. Registry scanners are seldom
the best fix for Vista problems, especially when they're used by someone
who doesn't know how to ignore the false positives that often find.
Vista and XP are separate versions of the Windows operating system;
one was not meant to run under the other.

We need more details of your problems, not more complaints about them,
to be able to offer much help with them.

Ok, Get on youer puter if you have vista, go to say craigs list , take any
post on there and open it. click on the reply link to answer the post and see
how far your mail gets ( or your reply), it will go nowhere period. A window
will pop up saying Vistas windows mail does not support HTTP servers mail,
hotmail or any other carriers like it. Like XP use to. This may not sound
like much of a problem to microsoft, but it is very agravating. It means you
either cut and paste the addy, or type it in. And even then it is not 100 %
sure it will go through. If a person on craigs list posts an ad selling a
trailer, and I try to respond to the posted return email on the posting ,
vista will not send it. it will take you through a maze of windows that
ultimately lead nowhere and do nothing. except to maybe DL another program
from microsoft or windows that need to be paid for before it will work. And
even then no guarentee it will fix the problem. All i want from vista is for
my mail to work. I already windows live mail , registery mechanic, and a host
of other microsoft and windows "quote"fixes, to fix this problem which none
of them do.

I just tried it, and when I clicked on an address, it opened my Thunderbird
email window, because I have it set to be my default email program.

If you want Windows Mail to be your default email program,
Go to "Start" - "Default Programs" - "Set your default programs".
Highlight "Windows Mail", then click on "Choose defaults for this program".
click on "Select all" to make sure the MAILTO is selected
click on "Save"

Do you have an email account (POP3 or IMAP) set up in Windows Mail?
You don't have to buy anything.

Call me stupid, but why would anyone make a product that would not work with
the previous product they had as an operatiing system when billions of ppl
already use the prior system. that is the height of ignorance in my book. It
would be like me plumbing 1/2 a house with water lines that were not
connected to the other half of the house. Bottom line ,,, some very mad
customers. Another bottom line,, anybody asks me about vista, I will tell
them to never buy a puter with it on it no matter how cheap it is. I have had
vista for one day and already want to pound microsoft geeks for this cute
little glitch in it. I spent 5 hours on the phone with 3 seperate microsoft
reps (who said for 150 bucks i could fix it), 2 seperate msn techies, and a
Dell rep that said i have to live with it now that this puter has vista on
it. If you look at this whole page it is full of mail problems form vista.
Seems to me someone should get on the stick and fix it. But then again, I
don't work for microsoft or sell extra software for problems. From what I
understand vista has been out for well over a year and no one knows of these
problems ( I think not). Not to mention it is hard to understand some guy in
India with a box of marbles in his miouth trying to speak english lol. Ya
know , the guy in India only make 2 cents on the dollar as opposed to 40 for
here.

I thought that was to easy to be true, stil ldoesnt work. And now I can not
even right click to open another window. Thanks, now i have to fix that too.

Do you have an account set up in Windows Mail that works?

Where are you right-clicking to open another window? And why?

I have an msnemail, and a yahoo email. have no idea what this pop3 or other
is . I can not open one for windows live as it will not accept my current
email addy. last thing I need is 4 different emails lol.

I right click on everything to open sub pages on the page i am on. doesn't
everybody??. Saves a lot of back buttons

MSN/Hotmail/Live and the free Yahoo email accounts are normally webmail
accounts, accessed with your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox).
Windows Mail cannot access any webmail accounts. The newer Windows Live
Mail can access MSN/Hotmail/Live accounts.

Supposedly, there's a program called Ypops that will let you access your
Yahoo account with Windows Mail, but I don't know anything about it.

Both of those providers have a premium service ($) that will let you access
their POP3 servers, so you can use Windows Mail/Windows Live
Mail/Outlook/etc..

It would help if you stick to just one issue when asking for help.
A wide-ranging rant is not at all helpful.

I don't see why you expect everything to work on Vista that you bought
for a prior operating system.
If you had bought a custom roof rack for a 1995 Chevy Impala, would it
necessarily fit on your new 2008 Chevy Impala? I think not.
