I have a Compaq Presario 2195US, and I cannot install the fax
software. When I go to "Add/Remove Programs" and click on "Add/Remove
Windows Components", I get a pop-up with the following error:

"The installation library for component fax could not be intialized."

Agter clicking OK, I get the list of windows components, but FAX is
nowhere to be found. Compaq customer support, in their infinite
wisdom, advised me to reinstall Windows. Great. Thanks. That's useful.

I've searched on Google and have found several other people asking for
help on the same problem, but never a response that seemed to fix it.

This is Win XP Home. My desktop running WinXP Pro and no modem shows
the fax software just fine.

Try this. Go to run and type sfc /scannow (note space between c and / ).
This will repair and replace system files which may be your problem . Jym

Thanks for the advice, but it didn't work - everything came up clean.
Great tip to remember for the future.

It's amazing that this problem continues to be an enigma.....
