Problem with Briefcase

B

B Hope

I am not sure which is the best newsgroup for this question.
I have Vista Business desktop and XP Pro laptop. I can see both machines,
network file and printer sharing all working but I can't set up a Briefcase
to share and sync documents. The files will copy across but they still
'need
updating' and when I try to update I see that all the files have been
'skipped'. Or I get an error 0X800705AD "insufficient quota to complete the
requested service" or some files copy and others don't. Never had a problem
when both machines were XP but I have struggled all evening with no joy.

Your help would be appreciated.

Regards

Barry

For what it's worth:

In trying to sync my XP Pro laptop to my Vista HP desktop, I
stumbled upon a procedure that seems to work:

1) make sure both machines can "see" each other's shared folders. If
they are in the same workgroup this should not be a problem.

2) place all the initial Briefcase files on the Vista machine in a
shared folder

3) On the XP Pro machine - create the Briefcase and check its
properties. If the new folder is marked "read only" uncheck that
designation.

4) On the XP Pro machine, drag the (shared) folders from the Vista HP
machine and drop them in the newly created Briefcase

5) Update the Briefcase on the XP Pro machine.

Hope this works as well for you as it did for me.

I don't see the point of this. Using Briefcase makes sense when you are
using portable media, like a floppy disk or USB flash drive (I using Zip
Disks when I used it), but when you have networked computers it would make
much more sense to use something like SyncToy instead. There is a v2.0 beta
as well as the released version.

Yeh I looked at that, but the current version (1.4) of SyncToy was not
listed as compatible with Vista. Have you used it with Vista? Thanks for
the heads-up.

I use Robocopy scripts, but I have not heard of any problems with SyncToy
and Vista. I can't see why it would not work. The beta seems to work well,
when I tried it out a few months ago.
