Problem with Animation

I have been going nuts trying to get a linked .gif animation to run within a
powerpoint that I email.
- of course, it works perfectly on my computer
- everyone I mail it to has powerpoint 2002 or later
- I also send the linked gif and make sure the ppt and gif are in the same
folder
- I tried to use pack and go but you have to also send the .exe file and
email servers don't like .exe's
- I have also tried changing my animation to loop twice because I read
elsewhere that a once only loop can cause problems in powerpoint.
- the .gif runs for about 30 seconds and was created in photoshop's image
ready 7.0 and it is almost 1 MB
- running PP2002, XP prof.

Thanks!!

thanks for the link on animation flags by Sonia - but, I would apparently
have to pay $25 to try that fix. The way I read MS documents, the gif does
not get embedded into the ppt file - in any case, my gif slide will not self
start when I email it. (I am using PP2002 and my clients are using 2002 or
above. Thanks, Tom

Linked pictures in PPT are a mess. Since you have to send both the picture and
the PPT anyhow, there's no filesize advantage to linking. I'd embed instead.

If there's a particular reason why you can't do that, then download the free
FixLinks demo at http://fixlinks.pptools.com

The free demo will repair your image links so that they'll work at the other
end, so long as the user puts the linked image and the PPT in the same folder
when they receive them from you. Getting the user to behave is beyond
FixLinks' capabilities. ,-)

See the other replies for info re how GIFs may animate differently on differnt
versions of PPT.

How are you adding it? If you use Insert, Picture, From File (which you
should), then it's embedded unless you specifically locate the Link command and
apply it. If you don't know where that is, then the files aren't linked.
in any case, my gif slide will not self
start when I email it.

If the users SEE it but it won't animate, then it's not linked.

Steve - thanks for your reply - I would love for the inserted picture which
is a 1MB gif animation to NOT be linked but rather be embedded - all I do is
insert it like I would any other picture - But, MS docs seem to say that
animated gif's have to be linked?

In any case, it works perfectly when I view it on my computer but when I
email the ppt or pps with or without the gif file in the same folder, I can
NOT get the inserted "picture" gif to work on another's computer - I have
tried inserting the gif as a movie, object, etc. - I also tried the
PFCmedia.com fix which seems to try to embed things but it would not let me
even insert a gif file

thanks for any help you can give!

Not that I've seen.

Movies are linked, but animated GIFs are a different animal as far as PPT is
concerned.

Let me ask again. Do the people at the other end see the GIF, but don't get it to
animate?

And are they viewing it in slide show mode? It won't animate in other views.

If they're seeing the image but not getting animation in slide show view, then the
info on Sonia's site is what you'll need to go with.

- yes they do see the gif's initial screen but no animation
- yes they see all of the other slides in the slide show
- the animation can be viewed perfectly in an IE window
- I tried PFCMedia again and it hung a few times but on one pass it failed
after finding "digital rights management" in the file; that led me to wonder
if some file property conflict is keeping PP from wanting to share the file?
Played around with that but if I look at the gif file properties I only see a
few things like horiz and vertical resolution, number of frames, etc - NOT
the variety of properties that one has on an inserted movie - any ideas on
properties?
- I would love to embed this file
- any other ideas?
Steve, Thank you very much ~ Tom Sullivan

That's probably an unrelated issue; I don't believe GIFs are subject to DRM and as far
as I know, PFCMedia doesn't deal with GIFs in any case.

GIFs are not inserted movies. They're pictures as far as PPT is concerned.

Again, the info you need to sort out the problem is on Sonia's site.

Thank you very much, Steve - I did go back to Sonia's site and do believe
there is a gif problem with PPT2003 which my clients apparently use. I
downloaded the GIF construction set to play with the loop flag and iteration
count settings - looks like it might be impossible to get all of PPT2000,
2002, 2003 and IE to all behave the same for a given combination of settings!
Thanks, again, for hanging in there with me! Tom

Glad that got sorted out ... annoying, though, to have something like this work differently
depending on the version of PPT.
