I am trying to create 2 accounts on one computer using
Windows XP Pro.
I want both accounts to NOT be able to see each others
applications.
EXAMPLE:
User 1: installs a game - do not want it to show up in
Users 2 start menu
User 2: Installs an application(Internet), do not want it
to show up, or avaliable for User 1.
How do I do this??
Do I have to create an Admin account, and 2 user accounts?
Or just 2 user accounts?
First - you should have at least two admin accounts on your machine.. Both
that you know the username/password for. One can be the default
"administrator", but there should be another for safety.
Secondly - I don't think what you are asking for is possible. I do not know
of a way to guarantee when a program (game, whatever) installs, that it
won't put the icons in the ALL USERS start menu and not just the user doing
the install. Not to mention that the only way you will be able to limit it
using NTFS that I can think of is to do something like this:
Create your two accounts(not mentioning the two admin accounts.) After
logging in with the two accounts to get them set up, create two directories
on your INSTALL drive (where you will be installing things.) On ONE of the
directories, remove the rights for everyone but Administrators and USER1.
On the other directory, remove the rights for everyone but Administrators
and USER2. Now, when USER1 installs, have them install in "their"
directory, and when USER2, have them install in "their" directory. In this
way, USER1 and USER may have similar icons (because of the ALL USERS
profile), but USER1 cannot RUN the application if it is in USER2s directory
and vice-versa. That's a semi-functional thought, anyway. heh
You might even be able to make those directories the "default install
directory" for each user, in turn.
Never tried it.. Sounds reasonable. Cannot think of any other way to do
it - because the program installing usually decides where to put the icons -
at least.
