Problem with a Dynamic disk

R

Richard Perry

I hope that someone here would be able to help me with this problem. I am
new to Dynamic Disks. I wanted to try to learn about this situation, so I
took a machine with 2 hard drives with Windows 2000 Server installed. I
converted the first disk to a dynamic disk, then converted the second disk
to dynamic as well. I wanted to merge the 2 dynamic volumes together, but I
couldn't do it since the first disk was converted from basic to dynamic.

The first drive was the C drive, then 2 CDROMs (D & E) then the 2nd HDD was
the F drive. I wanted to move F to D. I removed the drive letters for both
CDROMs, then tried to change the F drive to D. It said that it needed to
reboot. So, I rebooted, and now the dynamic disk is not available. I tried
to import it, but then I get all kinds of problems. It has been about 2 or 3
weeks now since I looked at it, so I don't remember all of the errors. But
if anyone knows of any good resource to recover from this, or if anyone has
had experience with this kind of problem, I would greatly appreciate the
help!

It really depends on your error. I suspect it is a simple problem unless
the partition was actually deleted. Please go to Disk Managment and post
what you see so someone can give you a answer. You need to give as much
info as possible.

Because my boss was jumping down my skin over getting this machine running
for who knows what purpose, I have no deleted the partition, reverted it
back to a basic disk, and formatted it. The drive is now working okay.
However, before I did all this, I captured some screen shots so that I might
be able to understand how I messed this up in the first place.

As I described earlier, I converted the primary disk to dynamic. Then I
converted the secondary disk to dynamic. I then created a simple volume on
the secondary disk. The only problem is that I didn't like the drive letter
given to the second disk. This is when I messed it all up.

This morning, I started the process again. I have Disk0 as dynamic and
healthy. Disk1 isn't even physically connected. I then power down, connect
Disk1, boot up and hove Disk0 as dynamic and healthy, Disk1 is dynamic and
foreign. I then import Disk1. The screen indicates that I have a simple
volume with a data condition of OK.

After the import, I am then with a screen that shows Disk1 as dynamic and
offline, with the simple volume as failed. At this point, there is nothing
that I can do with it. So I then reboot the machine so that the changes take
effect.

At the reboot, I am presented with a bluescreen that states along these
lines:
IRQL Not Less Or Equal
8042DD4C Base At 80400000 DateStamp 3ee6c002 ntoskrnl.exe

And then there is a lot of other information that I was unable to gather at
the time.

So, I then pull Disk1 and reboot. The machines boots normally. When I go
into Disk Management, it shows Disk1 as dynamic and missing. I deleted the
volume, converted the disk to basic, created a new partition, formatted
NTFS, rebooted, and now I have a good disk partition. So, I don't know what
I did or how I did it. But somehow in trying to change the drive letters, I
messed something up. So, any information anyone can give would be much
appreciated. If the screen shots would help, I can attach those as well.
