Problem when downgrade from Vista to XP

Hi I've recently downgraded from vista since I was annoyed by it. I got rid
of the vista files, and went to replace them when I installed windows. When
installing like about 10 files came up with a "could not find file error" and
I had to press esc to skip those files, the same thing happened with multiple
xp discs.

When I eventually get it to start windows get's to it's 4th step which is
'installing windows'. I get this popup saying

"FATAL ERROR:
An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed.

Access is denied.

Press OK to view the setup log file."

When I go to view the log file it reads

"Errorr:
Installation failed: D:\1386\asms. Error Message: Access is denied."

Anyone know what I should do now ._.?

Skipping files during the setup loading phase is always going to create
issues on the next phase of setup. Prior to starting XP setup did you
remove all the existing partitions/volumes on the disk drive. Trying to
use a Vista generated NTFS volume for XP has the potential to give
you problems.

As to the Asms issue - which type of XP disk are you using ? Retail,
OEM, VLK - Upgrade or Full license type disk.

Did you examine the XP disk surface and check for scratches and
scuff marks ? Sometimes you can click the "Retry" button on loading
and the file will successfully unpack/load.

you cannot downgrade an o/s, unless you did an upgrade and elected to keep
old version, without deleting partitions & clean installing

This means that I cannot use Windows XP any more on my laptop? That's
ridiculuos!.
Just more clearly: I've just bought a Sony laptop with Windows Vista
Business installed (of course licensed), and it not interested me then I want
to reinstall with XP.

Well, no, you certainly can put Windows XP on your new laptop. Your best
bet, though, is to do a clean install on a blank hard drive. I suggest
contacting Sony first to see what effect this approach may have on any
supplied software other than Vista.

You need to check on the Sony web site to see if they support XP on that
laptop. Some manufacturers are not supporting XP on certain new computer
models, in particular laptops. If there are no XP drivers provided by Sony
then you're out of luck with running XP.

(Regarding top-posting, when in Rome...)

DL didn't say you couldn't use XP on your laptop.

We know your laptop came with Vista. You say you want to instead use XP.
You now need to clarify what kind of XP installation disk you are using.
As R. McCary asked:

Retail, OEM, VLK - Upgrade or Full license type disk?
