Hi,

when I boot the first boot is always a black screen with a blinking
cursor, if I boot the second time I can normally boot into windows.
What kinds of problems could be most likely causing this, what things
should i check for to remedy the situation?

If the black screen is appearing right after POST but before the Windows
starts loading its services, then there may be a potential issue with the
computer's bios setup. One of the first things to check is the CMOS battery,
which may need replacement. The black screen is indicative of loss of the
bios information for the location of the boot sector of the hard drive,
when the computer starts up cold. On the second, warm re-start, the HD
parameters are re-loaded into the bios setup.

If a battery replacement does not eliminate the problem, then issues with
the hard drive itself may be present, including possible failure of the HD
itself. And the presence of viruses, malware, etc., also needs to be ruled
out. The PSU could also be suspect. Above all, make sure a backup (better,
backups) of important files exists. HTH.

Thanks. That was what I was worrying would be the case (at least where
HD issues are concerned)

Could be a hard drive or power supply problem.
