Problem w/ LPT1 Printer Port

I upgraded from MS Windows ME to XP Home Edition. Each
time I shut down the computer (Dell 8100 Dimensions) and
turn it off, I lose the printer connection and must go the
Devise Manager and switch to LPT2 then switch back to LPT1
and then it works. How can I make this setting permanent.
The printer is an HP LaserJet 4M, for which the printer
driver is on the XP install CD. Thanks.
