Problem w/.avi file

I am trying to insert an .avi file and powerpoint says it
can not recognize the file format. The .avi files play
with no problem in media player (version 9) on the same
computer. I have been successful inserting the .avi
files on a different computer with the same .avi files
and ppt version. Any reason why ppt will not recognize
these files???
