Problem using dial up with Vista

I have a new HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium preinstaled. When I
try connecting to the Internet (dialup) I can here the modems connecting. It
apparently accepts the password because it remains connected, which I can
verify by picking up the phone reciever. But IE7 won't display any website.
When I check the connection in Vista it claims that there is no internet
connection. I do not have a problem accessing using an XP computer on the
same line. When I spoke with HP they said the issue is with the provider not
being compatible with Vista. I have tried four differnet internet providers.
I can't even get the handshaking to connect with MSN and netzero. With
Earthlink vista says that it is conected to the internet, but IE7 still says
that it cannot connect to any web sites. Mozilla says the same thing.

HP claims that my computer was designed for Vista. All the drivers for the
hardware are the latest available and Vista's device manager and diagnostic
tools report that the hardware is working properly.

I have already tried the steps listed in the Microsoft articles I,ve found
online with no effect. I've also tried turning off the firewalls to see if
that might be the problem, but this had no effect.

The providers have been of little help and they claim it should work. I
suspect that they are just using the articles that can be found on the
Microsoft support web pages. (As a side note for anyone that's is
interested, Earthlink has a habbit of putting you on hold when they come to
the end of their checklist and then not coming back.)

Has anyone heard of this? Is there a work around? Something short of
setting up a dual boot system with XP (HP claims this would void my warranty).

Well I'll tell you that I have a HP laptop that was running Vista HP and now
Ultimate and it's connecting to Earthlink on a dialup. There are no
problems. So, HP is full of it.

Then it's something else that blocking the connection.

What FW is that Vista's FW?

Yeah I know.

The only warrantee that will be voided is the software not the hardware
warrantee with HP laptop itself.

During this conation, if you go to the Command Prompt and type in IPconfig
/all what IP does the machine have from the ISP.

If you do the same thing with the XP machine with IPconfig /all are the
IP(s) between the two machines in the ballpark.

Can you send/read a NG post or send/receive an email with the Vista machine?

I use to have problems with customer service from earthlink also. I feel
your pain.
How are you accessing the internet?
Are you opening a IE window and letting it auto dial or are you using a
connection manager?

Where does earthlink say its connected?

I dont know what you have tried so far so bear with me if I repeat somethign
youve done.

If you are using earthlink software to connect, dont. Try creating a basic
dial up connection.

Do you have a seperate email client? for example if you are connected can
you send an email via Outlook or windows mail? -- THis would help determine
where the problem might be. If you can do that, its not likely to be a
hardware or cable issue and is a problem with VIsta or IE

Would it be possible to have someone copy a 3rd party browser like mozilla
to a disk so you could install it and try to use it on your machine. If it
worked, you would know it was an IE issue.

Try those things and that might give your ISP enough data to determine a
solution also. Let us know if you are able to answer any of these questions
too. Maybe it will help us help you.

Hello Gene:
I am using MSN dial-up as an internet service provider without
problems......finally.
There are two things you need to do: (1.) Check the manufacturer of your
modem website to verify that it's drivers are Vista compatible and download
Vista drivers if needed. My guess is that Vista already downloaded suitable
basic drivers when it detected your modem. (I had to buy a new modem because
US Robotics didn't have working Vista drivers for my model.) (2.) To download
the proper MSN dial up software once you have a working modem go to:

http://membercenter.msn.com/signin.aspx?ru=/Default.aspx?lc=1033

to download the current MSN software or to sign up for MSN dial up. I get
my MSN dial up service thru Qwest and it is billed on my phone bill monthly,
which is convenient. There isn't much difference in price between dial up
MSN and some of the slower broadband services anymore and Vista would be much
more useful to you with broadband due to the amount of automatic downloading
of media information it does.

Hi again Gene:
Forgot to mention; if you do sign up for MSN thru Qwest, be sure to
download the MSN software from the url I mentioned and don't use the MSN cd
that you will probably be sent. It's very likely that the software on their
cd is not suitable for Vista. Even if MSN sends you a cd, it's safer to
download it than use possibly outdated software.
