Problem upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows XP Professional

I

Ivan

I was trying to upgrade my computer from Windows XP Home
to Windows XP Professional and in the middle of the
installation, the computer restarts and once it reboots it
says it is "restarting setup" ... when it gets to the same
point in the installation process, it restarts again and
says it is restarting setup ... it keeps doing this
process endelessly.

The last screen the installation shows before rebooting is
right after finishing "installing devices" ... and when it
starts showing "installing network" ...

I don't know what to do. If I take the installation CD out
of the drive, it asks me to put it back in ... I cannot
boot my laptop anymore in Windows XP Home ...

Please ... somebody help me.

Due to the fact that certain hardware and software is written to work with Windows
XP when the operating system is running, some problems can occur during the upgrade
process where drivers or hardware return invalid infomation when being queried by
the Windows XP installer.

Windows XP by default is set to restart itself upon a system failure when a blue
screen error message appears due to a hardware or software failure

To obtain the infomation that the blue screen has to offer about the failure, we
have to be in the GUI portion, or "windows mode" of the Windows XP upgrade or install. During the GUI
portion of setup, you can hold down Control key and press "F10" at the same time.

This will launch cmd.exe, the Windows 32-bit command line interpetor. From the command line, you can
launch any program on the machine. In this case we need to launch sysdm.cpl

Sysdm.cpl is the system control panel. When the control panel is up, click on the
advanced tab and click on the settings button on Startup and Recovery. In the
middle of the next window that appears, there is a section called System Failure.

Uncheck "automatically restart" and click on OK to close the windows. If the
machine has another system failure, instead of restarting leaving you to guess what
the problem is, the stop 0x error message will appear stating what the problem is.

Once you know the Stop error, you can search for solutions on http://support.microsoft.com
