problem turning off computer

O

When close down/turn off computer, finishes on the
screen/monitor showing Microsoft Windows XP logo under
this logo says in small writing "It is now safe to turn
off your computer" never had this before, usually just
switched itself off. The trouble is the switch on tower
to turn off needs to be held in for ages to actually
switch computer off. Same thing happens in the
Administrator and the User accounts.
Thanks in anticipation

Check in control Panel - Power Options - APM for an option for "Enable
Advanced Power Management options" and place a check in the box. See if
this helps.

A probable cause is that your installation found the BIOS does not
adequately support the 'Advanced Configuration & Power Interface'
(ACPI). It then installs the older APM, but leaves it disabled. Go to
Control Panel - Power Options, and if there is an APM page, check
'Enable APM' on it. You probably had this checked and the setting has
been disturbed
