I had several notices that I have files that had been altered. So I
attempted to reinstall Windows XP from My CD. However, the procedure gets to
Registering Components and stalls with a window titled "unregmp2.exe Entry
Point Not Found". In the window is "The procedure entry point GetUMS could
not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL."
I have Windows 98 in the first partition and Windows XP in the second
partition, and use PowerQuest Partition Magic to to select either Windows 98
or Windows XP. So I can not boot to the CD since it will boot to Partition 1
with the Windows 98. I have to let the Partition Magic boot screen come up
first. Then, I select Windows XP and it's boot selections come up by
pressing F8. None of these includes an option to boot to the CD.
Now, I'm stuck and need help!

Greetings,

Well, I use BootIt, not PM,
but the principle should be similar -

Set up a boot item in PM that is set to boot CD
(also use it to HIDE the 98 partition)
then boot to that item.

BIG Problem - Windows XP is stuck in a Set Up mode. All it wants to do is
restart setup???? What now, reformat???

Please help

Well,
If you can afford to lose everything, then yes,
a reformat and fresh install of XP would give best results.

But
you do not have to reformat to do a fresh XP install...

You can just boot from CD and chose a new (fresh) install WITHOUT format -
you will get a new Windows but any other folders on hard drive will be OK
(note that My Docs is usually LOST, and programs will need re-install)

(You may have to go into the BIOS to get the PC to boot CD.)

Before you install, it would be good to collect the following on CD or hard
drive -

* drivers for all devices
* Dx9
* antivirus install (try free AVG from Grisoft)
* antispyware install (AdAware, SpyBot S&D, SpyWareBlaster)
* all CDs for your programs (e.g. Office...)

Make SURE you have the firewall turned on, and all AV and ASpW installed
before connecting to internet.

I would love to boot to the CD. If I could have, I would not have the
problems I have now. But, I have not figured a way to boot Windows XP (on
the second partition). Do you know a way I can do it? I seem to remember
there is a way but I don't remember it

Hmmm...
Dunno what your problem is exactly,

I use BootIt, I have no problem booting to any partition.

What are you getting stuck on?

(and why can't you boot CD?)

Q.

You said -
"So I can not boot to the CD since it will boot to Partition 1"

That is not correct - Booting from CD will not "boot to partition 1"
Booting from CD will Boot from CD, allowing access to all partitions
(usually.)

You can then install on the partition 2 where you want XP.

Alternatively,
If PM is like BootIt, you can setup a boot item to boot to CD with Win98
partition HIDDEN, then boot to that item with the CD inserted.
